February Meeting Completed, Time to Plan for March!

Our February 2013 meeting was last night, and in spite of a few technical mishaps (the library lost our room reservation, so we ended up moving to the Beaumont Branch Library, to a 12-person room with no projector) I think it was an excellent first meeting of the year! For a meeting that was planned in under a week, I think we had an excellent turnout, and the presentation was very well received.

Therefore, it’s time to start planning for March’s meeting!

In browsing the Lexington Public Library Room Request Schedule, it looks like Thursday nights are a pretty safe bet moving forward, as far as finding a large conference room with a projector at a library. Saturday afternoons are still a possibility as well, given that a few people in the group aren’t in the Lexington area, and it might be easier to show up on a weekend.

Another option, going back to the original roots of BGLUG and LPLUG before it, might be to look at meeting up for lunch from time to time. The real problem I see with that is excluding people not in the Lexington area.

Realistically, we need to have a meeting to hash out exactly when and where the majority of people are able to get together. I would, therefore, propose an IRC meeting on Tuesday, February 12th, at 9pm. If this time isn’t good, and you’d like to share your opinion on locations and times for upcoming meetings, feel free to leave a comment on this post, join the Google+ Community and leave a comment there, or just come into the IRC channel and talk about it any time.

Hope to hear back from some of you soon, or see you in the IRC channel meeting on February 12th at 9pm.

February 2013 BGLUG Meeting

It’s a new year, so it’s time to get this group up and going again. We’ve decided to have our first meeting of 2013 at the Tates Creek Branch Library on February 5th from 6pm to 8pm. The meeting will probably only last until 7 or 7:30, but there will be time afterward for socializing and discussion. Brian Smith (pingwin) will be giving a presentation for us on Erlang and scripting.
If you’re on Google+, you can view the event here: https://plus.google.com/events/cn9ajcpankf78gf1gi6l9r13b50

Also, here’s a map to the location, just in case:

Hope to see you there!

Meeting Revitalization

There has been some talk lately on G+ about starting up the meeting schedule again. It seems that a Collexion has been chosen as the meeting location. There have been some good ideas for topic ideas floating around such as:

  • cloud services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS)
  • kickstart\autoyast\similar
  • virtualization – bare metal and para
  • configuration management with cfengine\puppet\etc
  • erlang
  • programming\scripting languages
  • backup solutions
  • If you happen to be on G+ then feel free to follow the new page.

    IRC meeting 1/26/12

    Hey all,
It has been quite a while since we had a meeting of any kind. That being said … tomorrow night (Thursday 1/26/12) at 8:30 PM EST we will have an irc meeting in #bglug to discuss upcoming real life meetings. Please come and participate in this meeting. Bring all of your best ideas about what you would like to do at our meet ups.

    2011 BGLUG Holiday Dinner Scheduled!

As of this morning (I know, late notice) the BGLUG Holiday Dinner plans have been made. We are planning to meet at Texas Roadhouse in Lexington at 5:30pm on December 10th.
Again, sorry for the late notice. We hope you can attend!

    September IRL Meeting

This month our meeting will be on Saturday the 17th and will be held at the Collexion hackerspace. The are located at 109 E. Loudon Ave. Lexington, KY 40505. The plan is that we will chip in a few bucks for pizza and drinks. If there is any money left over then we will donate it to the Collexion to help support them since they are allowing us to meet in their facility.

The topic for this month will be server automation. Warren has volunteered to present on HP’s Server Automation suite which he uses everyday for his job. If time permits and someone would like to discuss other automation tools then we can probably work those in as well.

    July IRL Meeting

So it is almost meeting time once again. I posed the a question on Google+ about meeting topics and the package management was what appeared to be the winner. We can discuss all different packaging systems (debian, redhat, *bsd, pacman, etc). I may be able to discuss the spacewalk project (http://spacewalk.redhat.com) some as well.

Mike was able to get us a room booked at the Tates Creek library for this Saturday 2:30 to 4:30. He was also able to book the large conference room on August 20th from 2:30 to 4:30. This library branch is very nice.

    Hope to see everyone there.

    June IRL Meetup

This months meeting is almost upon us. This month we will be having a presentation on IPv6 given by Brian Smith (pingwin). Our location this month will be at the Eagle Creek branch of the Lexington public library. The meeting time will be the normal 2:30 to 4:30 and it will be this Saturday (June 18th). We do need to try to be done with the meeting and out by 5:00 because that is when the library closes. Feel free to bring someone with you as I expect that this could be a great learning experience.

    May meeting reminder

This is just a quick reminder that we will be meeting this coming
Saturday (May 22nd) for our monthly IRL meeting. We will be meeting at
East Side Technical School[1] from 2:30 – 4:30. The meeting topic is
going to be about the Haiku OS[2]. I will also have all of the ubuntu
11.04 cds with me for anyone that wants to take some and pass them
out. Hope to see you all there.

    May IRL meeting

This months IRL we will be talking about Haiku[1]. From their site …

“Haiku is an open source operating system currently in development that specifically targets personal computing. Inspired by the Be Operating System, Haiku aims to become a fast, efficient, simple to use, easy to learn and yet very powerful system for computer users of all levels.”

Because of National College taking some time off of allowing meetings to happen there we will be meeting at East Side Technical School[2]. Thanks Mike for setting this up for us. The meeting time will be from 2:30 to 4:30 (or so) on May 21st.

We have also invited the good people from the Collexion[3] group (irc.freenode.net #collexion) to join us this month. When I mentioned the topic in there channel they seemed interested in the meeting and it will nice to see some new faces.
