Logo Design Contest

Do you have some mad skills with gimp, inkscape, etc? If so then you may be interested in helping us with a logo redesign that jfalco mentioned on the list. We are currently working out the details of how to turn this into a contest. The basic idea would be that we would set a date that submissions would need to be in by. Once we reach the deadline we’ll set up a poll to get the members to vote on the one that is their favorite. Feel free to submit more than on entry if you like. Currently we have 4 logos submitted on the wiki.

Once we have some details worked out about the contest we will let you know. Don’t let that stop you from submitting ideas though as we will count anything submitted from now until the ending date.

Thanks and can’t wait to see what you all can come up with.

September 2nd IRC Meeting

Tonight we had one of the best IRC meetings we have had for a very long time. One thing that really helped was having a well planned agenda. It was the first time that we have had 23+ people (not counting bots) in the channel and most of them talking in quite a long time. Quite a bit of topics were covered too. We had 2 members volunteer to help write content for this site and their ideas were fantastic. I am really looking forward to seeing their contributions on the site soon.

Thanks to all who were able to make it tonight but if you were not able to make it to the meeting you can check out the logs here.

Fight Cancer With Linux (BSD/windows/mac too)

Last night we were having a conversation in #bglug about system load and what exactally those numbers mean. Turns out my system load was pretty low. Considering my box is mostly used for IRC and the bots for #bglug and #twil I wasn’t surprised. My box is sporting a AMD Phenom x3 at 2.1Ghz with 6GB of DDR2, so I have a ton of computing power just sitting there not being used. That seems to be the case with most PCs since on average a PC is idle 80% of the time. Pingwin pointed me toward SETI@home and told me how they use your unused processing power to help find Extraterrestrial Intelligence. This got me to googling and I came across IBM’s World Community Grid, which is basically the same thing except WCG works on disease and climate research.

Getting started was fairly simple and I’ll run you through a quick tutorial on what I did to get up and running.

August IRL Meeting

We are having our regular meeting on August 21st from 2:30 – 4:30 EST. This months topic of discussion will be about GNU Screen. If you have never used this handy little application then you are in for a treat. It is perfect for everyone from home users to sysadmins. We will show you:

  • Why screen is so useful
  • How to get the most out your screen usage
  • How to pimp your screenrc

The screen presentation should not take the full 2 hours. After we finish up we are hoping to be able to take a little bit of time to discuss where we are going as a team. What kind of changes do we need to make to attract some more members? What kind of things do we need to be doing with ?the website, forum, projects, etc.. ?

I mentioned in the last post that we are going to be meeting in a new location. We are hoping to see you all at the meeting.

IRL Meeting Changes

There are changes in the wind. The Eagle Creek library has been an awesome place for us to meet for the last year. Yeah there are some limitations but it always met our needs when we were there. Rob has done some checking and it seems that the library already has a booking for our normal time slot :( . However all is not lost. Rob sent out an email to a few of us with what has the potential to be fantastic news. Following is what he had to say:

Guys,

I spoke with Eagle Creek Library last week and confirmed they were occupied during our normal meeting time this month.  CKCS is excited about the possibility of our group using their facility regularly as this is their focus, to provide a central meeting place for groups like ours.  I touched base with their President, Mike Sylar this morning and confirmed Saturday August 21st from 2:30pm to 4:30pm is clear for us to use.

The Vice-President, Bob Brown, will be there on Saturday to observe our group and discuss Membership options and CKCS’s goals with us.  He had mentioned the first time I spoke with him that they have a free advertisement block that gets rotated in to the Herald Leader occasionally as well.

What does this mean for us? Well it means that we potentially have a permanent and regular meeting location. No more hoping from place to place each month. I don’t know about you but I think that this is fantastic news. So that being said this month (as you saw in the email) will be at the CKCS location. Hope to see everyone there.

New host and new look

If you have not noticed we have moved to a new hosting service (thanks Joe). Along with that change is a move from Joomla (sorry Rob) to WordPress. We are really hoping to start using the site more. There are still a few changes that need to happen behind the scenes to make everything smooth. Our plan is to start trying to post more than just meeting reminders. I would love to see us start posting reviews of apps, books, etc. If you have any thoughts on how we should use the site please leave some comments. If you would like to chat with us in real time you can always head over to irc.freenode.net in your favorite irc client and stop by the #bglug channel. If you are very new to the whole IRC thing then you can always use the web client on this site by clicking IRC in the bar at the top.

July IRL Meeting

The next IRL meeting is almost upon us. We are just one week away. Next Saturday, July 17th from 2:30 to 4:30 at the Eagle Creek Library in Lexington is the place to be.

This month we will be discussing MySQL. Rob (crosscut) has lined up a fantastic speaker for this month. His name is Eddie Pauley and he is a certified MySQL DBA. This will help us lay a good firm foundation for further database discussions as well as our planned LAMP talks.

We have also invited the LEXMUG (http://lexmug.com/J10/index.php) group. Lets make them feel welcome. I am sure that our groups can learn a lot from each other.

May IRL Meeting

We will be having our normal real life meeting on Saturday May 22nd from 2:00PM – 5:00PM at the Eagle Creek branch of the Lexington Public Library.

FURTHER UPDATE: After some discussion, we decided that May’s meeting should be an Ubuntu / Fedora release party! Since Ubuntu just released version 10.04 a few weeks ago, and Fedora is releasing their new version on the 25th, we’ll talk about the features of the new versions, give demonstrations, and help out with installs if you need it. Come hang out!

UPDATE: Our presenter fell through, so we’re in the process of securing a new presenter / topics for this month’s meeting. Sorry for the inconvenience. The meeting is still on, and we will update you via email of any further updates.

Topics for this month include:

  1. DNS
  2. Django

If there is enough time we are planning on trying to work out a presentation schedule for the next 3 – 4 months. We hope to see you there and make sure to bring a friend.

April IRL Meeting

Sorry for the really late notice on this months meeting. The meeting for this month is this Saturday (April 17th) from 12 – 3pm. We are having to move our meeting location once again because of SAT preparations being done at the local libraries. This month we will be meeting at Tates Creek Christian Church. This is the same location as the gaming night we had a while back.

Topics for this months meeting are:

  1. Introduction to Zimbra
  2. Video editing with Kdenlive (if time allows)

If there is time we will most likely spend a little bit trying to plan for an upcoming Install Fest and Release Party.

For directions to the location see here.
